Brass etching is a process that uses a chemical reaction to work the surface of brass. This process is also known as chemical milling, chemical brass engraving, or electrochemical etching. In brass etching, an acid is used to engrave the desired characters, letters, or numbers into the brass, allowing for highly detailed and complex designs to be applied to the metal. There are many applications for brass engraving. It can be used to engrave brass nameplates, brass plates (such as number plates, nameplates, or type plates), and it is also useful for control panels, enabling clear markings on machines and equipment.

What happens during brass etching?

Because Etsprit has extensive experience with brass etching, we know exactly what needs to be done to achieve the best results. The process begins with proper preparation, thoroughly cleaning the brass surface to remove dirt, oil, and oxidation. Next, a protective layer such as wax, varnish, or a special etch resist is applied, onto which the desired design or pattern is drawn or cut. The prepared brass is then placed in an etching solution, such as ferric chloride. This solution eats away the exposed metal, embedding the design into the surface. Afterward, the protective layer is removed, revealing the etched design. Finally, the etched brass is further finished by polishing, patinating, or applying other treatments to achieve the desired appearance.
